Phase 1 is the diagnostic engine of the entire engagement. Before any design work begins, WatsonAI conducts a rigorous, evidence-based assessment of your organization across six critical dimensions: strategy, structure, processes, rewards, people, and AI governance. Five parallel workstreams establish an objective baseline that every subsequent phase builds on.
No assumptions are made. No designs are proposed. This phase is entirely about learning your organization as it is, not as leadership hopes it will be.
Timeline: 2–4 Weeks
WHAT WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED
- Current-state organizational profile documented across all six STAR model dimensions
- KPI baseline established for operations, HR, technology, finance, and customer functions
- Existing AI governance state inventoried: policies, tools, and accountability structures
- Legal and compliance impediments to transformation will be identified and mapped
- Organizational change readiness assessed using the Watson Transformation Readiness Framework
- AI maturity and workforce AI exposure will be evaluated by role family, with capability gaps scored
- Business strategy validated against the current workforce structure to identify strategic misalignment
WHY THESE STEPS ARE TAKEN
AI transformations fail when built on assumptions rather than evidence. Most organizations believe they know their readiness, and most are wrong. The Assess phase replaces intuition with documented facts, giving your leadership team a shared, candid view of where the organization truly stands. Without this baseline, there is no way to measure progress, defend decisions to legal counsel, or build a future state grounded in reality.
Every design decision in Phase 2 is directly traceable to a finding in Phase 1. This is what makes the process defensible, credible, and built to withstand scrutiny.
