Matt D.M. Watson, PhD, PMP, is an author and leader in organizational transformation with over 25 years of experience building high-performing organizations in the military, energy, technology, and government sectors. Matt D.M. Watson, PhD, PMP, is an author and leader in organizational transformation with over 25 years of experience building high-performing organizations in the military, energy, technology, and government sectors. He founded WatsonAI, a practice based in Boise, Idaho, dedicated to assisting small and mid-sized businesses with AI tools implementation and developing the organizational change capacity necessary to sustain transformation over time.

Matt's journey began not in a boardroom but on the battlefield. As a Forward Air Controller in the United States Air Force, he served during the invasion of Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division, an experience that solidified his beliefs about leadership: that clarity of mission, trust in people, and the courage to navigate uncertainty are not just management techniques; they are disciplines forged under pressure that determine whether an organization thrives or falters. Every engagement with WatsonAI is rooted in this foundational philosophy.

After his military service, Matt joined the Bechtel Corporation, where he served as Organizational Development Project Manager and later as a Training Director. He played a pivotal role in scaling the organization from 600 to 2,000 employees, architected a succession framework, and led a team of 25 instructors delivering over 9,200 training events annually. His Lean Six Sigma–driven process improvements resulted in saving more than 56,000 work hours annually and reduced training fail rates to 1%. It was during his time at Bechtel that Matt became convinced that the most significant competitive advantage any organization can possess is a continuously developed workforce, rather than simply managed.

He carried this conviction to Hewlett-Packard (HP Inc.) in Boise, where he initially served as Business Development Project Manager, establishing HP's eCommerce Project Management Office, delivering 28 organizational development and Lean projects with an 84% success rate, and generating $26 million in first-year sales from a new SMB sales center. As he progressed to Senior Director of Learning & Organizational Development, he led a 24-person team, designed gamified learning systems, deployed Power BI and Tableau for executive decision-making, and drove $45 million in sales growth alongside a 38% reduction in employee attrition.

In his role as Chief Operating Officer and VP of Content at Music Career Maps, Matt co-led a seed-round startup, increasing its valuation from $5.5 million to $10 million by integrating AI services that reduced course creation time from 4 weeks to 25 minutes, and scaling the platform from 26 to 3,000 users. This experience highlighted the importance of organizational readiness in implementing AI tools and crystallized WatsonAI's mission.

Matt has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Boise State University in the Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning department, teaching the graduate-level course on Leading Change Management and developing the department's career mentoring program. He is the author of 9 books and 5 peer-reviewed journal articles on topics such as organizational behavior, innovative workplace environments, and workforce dynamics.

Matt holds a PhD in Global Leadership and Change, a Master of Arts in Learning Technologies from Pepperdine University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP), a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).

Implementation ≠ Transformation. A business that engages in AI tools implementation without altering how its people work will revert to old habits within 60 days. The Watson Change Architecture addresses both the technology and the human operating system. Outcomes over Technology. Value is measured in hours reclaimed, revenue generated, roles clarified, and organizational capacity built, not in the number of tools configured. Ownership, not Dependency. Every workflow, job description, and org chart belongs to the client. The goal is to make Watson AI unnecessary. Clients leave with systems, not subscriptions.

Facilitating Innovation

AI and organizational readiness scorecard self-assessment for executives

The era of process management is fading away, and the age of innovation is upon us. This is ushering in the era of knowledge creation, where organizations' goal is to discover how to find and leverage new value in the market. However, people are products of their environment. The culture you have built for your organization either stimulates or stunts creative thought.

Nudge Change Management

Facilitating Innovation

CHRO managing workforce transition and employee trust during AI adoption

Whether a global corporation or a small business, change is often ‘done’ to a voiceless workforce. Management wields the power of disruption and often does so without engaging those who will be impacted in an opportunity to help design the change. Though most will claim there is no other way, utilizing such an approach highlights a real blind spot for managers. Including employees in the process has been proven to directly lead to successful change implementation. Simply put, managers and change management practitioners must rethink how they implement change initiatives in their organizations.

Strategy: For the Small Business

Chart showing the high failure rate of AI and digital transformations

Most of your competitors are using rudimentary planning tools with haphazard tactics. They are vulnerable to disruption and to businesses that know how to execute a competitive strategy.

Strategy for the Small Business will guide you through the five stages of competition-based strategic planning, with easy-to-use templates to help you refine your approach to winning.

Strategy Pocketbook

AI task taxonomy analyzing which roles are augmented or automated

Strategies move an organization down a long-term path, put the business in a position to take advantage of competitors, and lay the groundwork for achieving greatness. It is the lifeblood of an organization, yet numerous companies fail to develop anything beyond an annual financial plan. The Strategy Pocketbook will help explain the strategy process and guide your organization toward a competitive advantage.

Enabling Innovation

Stage-gated delivery model for AI transformation engagements

"Enabling Innovation" has decoded the formula for building a creative culture. Over the last century, the average lifespan of a company has moved from 60 to under 18 years. That timeline is shrinking each day. Society and markets transform rapidly, with technology significantly increasing that rate of change. New ideas, products, and strategies have become the linchpin in keeping companies afloat. Company visions, buzzwords, and jargon all call for innovation. However, these same institutions design barriers that inherently limit creativity.
